Thank you for insigtful editorial on the Mount Vernon Public School District. You’re absolutly right, we need leadership that calls for a major overhaul of the public schools district…The children deserve so much more than what we are giving them. That includes rebuilding the traditional educational model and examining alternative educational models. A district sponsored charter school is a good idea, especially if there is a model that is promising. The idea of ruling out a district-sponsored charter School model as an alternative because of some of its structural programs is short sighted. Our current school districts have many structural problems; and we continue to invest in this broken system. Broken…We lose 30% of families who children graduate from elementry school who elect to leave the district instead of enrolling in middle school. it, in spite of the fact that we have the lowest graduation rates in the county and in spite of the fact that for the parents who send their children to the district’s elementary school, 30% Public Schools belong to the Public and its time the public demand greater accountability for its investment of public dollars.
